Bidahochi Black-on-White Ladle
Anasazi (Prehistoric Pueblo); Tusayan Whiteware; medium size ladle; 1250-1300 A.D.
Kayenta series. Gray paste, no slip, vegetal paint. Ladle with a rounded bowl and a modified “cradelboard” handle, the bowl is decorated with hatched and solid fringed spirals and the handle has a series of frets that terminate in dot-in-square motifs. All the edges of the ladle form are ticked. Anasazi (Prehistoric Pueblo); Jeddito Yellowware; medium size bowl; 1400-1625 A.D.
Hopi Tradition. Yellow clay with orange-red and black-brown mineral paint. Rounded bowl with an outcurved rim. The burnished yellow surface has dark brown and red painted decorations consisting of an angular black “sky band” painted below the exterior rim on one third of the vessel shoulder. The interior features an asymmetrical spiraling composition of a stylized quiver and band design with negative motifs, which curve around a centrally placed bisected quadruped. Ciblola Mineral Paint Tradition. Black mineral paint, bright white slip. Jar with a thick rounded shoulder and a restricted neck that flares slightly at the rim. The body of the vessel is decorated with three eccentric squared bands which arch slightly from quarter-point to quarter-point. McDonald Corrugated and Incised Bowl

Gray to red paste, quartz sand temper, corrugated, brick-red exterior, incised and painted with white fugitive paint. Corrugated utility bowl; coils flattened forming a repetitive surface design. Red clay, sand temper, raspberry red with white and fugitive black paint, finely done and unusual; atypical for Tonto polychrome. Male effigy globular jar with a cylindrical neck and outcurved rim. The effigy face, arms, hands and penis are modeled on one side of the neck and shoulder of the vessel. Zuni-Hopi Tradition. Sikyatki like shaped jar with a shallow rounded base, thick rounded shoulder, and a suppressed neck that tapers to a slightly outcurved rim. Gray clay quartz sand temper, white slip, black mineral paint. Hemispheric bowl with an interior composition of three thick decorative bands that frame a circular reserved center. Motifs that decorate the bands include grid-and-dot patterning, fringed pendant angels with dot-in-circle fill, and interlocking stepped-barbed angles. Flagstaff Black-on-White Bowl

Gray clay, quartz sand temper, white slip, carbon paint - sometimes mixed with mineral paint, all over complex designs, negative trend. Kayenta Series, vegetal paint. The Flagstaff designs contained diagonal hatching, paired geometric designs, and small squares with dots. Gray clay mineral paint, corrugated neck, hatched geometric scroll design. Jar with a low thick shoulder and opposing strap handles. The upper body is nearly hemispheric in form. It curves to a restricted cylindrical neck, which is corrugated textured and flares slightly at the rim. (This is also a common Mesa Verde form.) The rims are more everted - 90 degrees - and in the KAYENTA area the corrugations are flattened. The CHACO CORRUGATED bowl example has a beautifully white slipped white clay body, quartz sand temper and a finger-dented corrugated surface design.
