Kayenta Black-on-White Seed Jar
Anasazi (Prehistoric Pueblo); Tusayan Whiteware; small seed jar; 1250-1300 A.D.
Gray clay, white slip, vegetal black paint, negative design with solid areas of black paint with white scrolls. Seed jar with a hemispheric body and an eccentric flattened neck that closes to a direct circular rim. Zonal band decorations are painted in the Kayenta negative style on the horizontal flat neck and below the shoulder angle. Tonto Polychrome Tall-Neck Jar

Brown clay, red slip surrounds areas of black and white painted design; smudged shiny black interior. Jar with low thick shoulder and tall neck that tapers to a flared rim. The Tonto style painting incorporates red into the overall design, and is in the Roosevelt “stage two” style with dot-ticked fringed opposing elements and serrated framing devices. The neck decoration features four rectangular black serrated panels with red “sun” motifs with black serrated edges on a circular white ground. Hopi Tradition. Yellow clay, black-brown mineral paint, bear clan sign and broken arrow. Rounded bowl with an outcurved rim. The burnished yellow surface has dark brown painted decorations consisting of an angular “sky band” painted below the exterior rim on one third of the vessel shoulder. An interior decoration features a three-sided broken arrow with a shield motif appended to the center. The exterior is decorated with a bold red stripe below the rim, while the interior has an offset quartered composition and rectangular reserved center formed by bold red banding. Strikingly beautiful bowl in red, pink, orange, with black and gray fire clouds. Made from clays near the Sunset Volcano; demonstrates importance of slip. Clay is mixed with volcanic sand temper, which after firing forms an unattractive gray to black porous ceramic. Thick red-pink slip is coated on the surface until the porous holes are filled while the rim of the bowl is left unslipped or black.
